Thanks to the power of Twitter, we got involved with the work of Wirral Youth Heroes in the North West of the UK.
The Wirral Youth Heroes Awards is a grassroots response to the summer riots, which involves the whole community through an online nomination process at www.youthheroes.org.uk.
The Wirral is home to 1,000′s of young people who are heroes and Wirral YFC want to find the most inspirational from amongst them. The awards, which are all to be sponsored by local businesses, will be presented to the winners at a prestigious gala awards dinner at Thornton Hall Hotel on the 24th February 2012, with the overall winner taking home a brand new iPad2. VIP guests include Ester McVey MP, Frank Field MP, The Mayor of Wirral, Bishop of Birkenhead Rt Revd Keith Sinclair, Chief Superintendent John Martin and stars from TV and radio.
At 3pm on the 3rd December 2011, the Pyramids shopping centre in Birkenhead was brought to a standstill by what sounded like an air raid siren, shortly followed by Black Lace’s Superman song booming through the PA. As the track progressed Super Heroes and Panto characters began to appear in the doorway of a bright red ‘Nicoll Industries’ gazebo and led the watching crowds in the Superman dance. Some onlookers simply stirred in amused amazement while many others were caught up in the moment and began to join in.
Martin Dickson, Director of Wirral YFC, explained the reasons for what he hopes will be an annual event, “Our hope was for two things. Firstly, we just thought it would be great fun, we wanted to make people smile. Secondly we wanted to help raise awareness for the Wirral Youth Heroes Awards hence emerging from our incredible Youth Heroes Nominations Gazebo”.
If you know an inspirational young person who deserves some recognition then make sure you nominate them soon. The closing date for nominations is the 31st January 2012 and the high profile Gala Awards Dinner will take place on the 24th February 2012 at Thornton Hall Hotel. Nominees must be between 11 and 19 years old on the 24th February 2012.
UPDATE
As an update, the awards on February 24th were hosted by Andrew Lancel, aka Frank Foster from Coronation Street. We would like to say a huge congratulations to the winners. Among the winners was Josh Rotherham who picked up the award for ‘Inspirational Volunteer’ as well as being crowned the overall winner. The 19-year-old escaped gang culture to work with Wirral Youth Theatre where he supports young people with disabilities, self-esteem issues and low confidence. Well done!
